EJ’s First Birthday Cake Smash | Cleveland Baby Photographer

It is always such a joy when a photography client becomes so much more than a client, and this family is one of those families for me. I have had the pleasure of photographing them for several years now, starting with Mom’s maternity session and then watching their family grow through big brother’s newborn and first birthday sessions. Getting to celebrate another milestone with them for EJ’s first birthday made this session especially meaningful.

EJ, whose full name is Elijah, goes by EJ, and his middle name is Jordan. With Dad being a big basketball fan, I think it is safe to say there was a little basketball inspiration behind his name!

For EJ’s first birthday session, Mom had a few special ideas in mind. She wanted one setup inspired by big brother’s first birthday photos, another featuring EJ’s adorable collection of high top shoes, and then she sent me a photo of the sweetest little onesie she had found. I loved the idea of building his cake smash setup around it.

We pulled the colors from the onesie and created a simple, timeless cake smash setup in warm shades of brown and green. It was the perfect backdrop for his one year portraits and fit EJ’s style so well.

And then there was the cake!

EJ was one very happy little birthday boy. He absolutely loved his cake and had the best time digging in. Those happy, messy cake smash photos are some of my favorite images from a first birthday session because they capture so much personality at this age.

One of my favorite parts of being a Cleveland baby photographer is getting to watch families grow over the years. From maternity portraits to newborn photos, first birthdays and all of the milestones in between, it is incredibly special to be invited back again and again to document these memories.

After photographing this family for several years, they truly feel like family to me. I am so grateful they continue to trust me with these important milestones, and I cannot wait to see what comes next for EJ and his big brother.

Happy first birthday, EJ! You are one very loved little boy, and I think we can all agree that you have excellent taste in cake.
