Capturing Cleveland: Top Family Photography Tips for Stunning Photos
Before we get to the tips, I just wanted to take a moment to share how incredible our evening by Lake Erie was! It was truly the perfect night for catching up and making memories. I still can’t get over how much Audrey has grown—she’s turning into such a funny, smart, and loving little girl. From the very first time I met her at her newborn session, I had a feeling she was going to be a sweetheart.
And can we talk about how we picked one of the best nights ever for our session? The swirling cotton candy sky was absolutely breathtaking and so photo-worthy. The sunset was perfection, casting the most beautiful glow over your sweet family. It was one of those moments where everything just felt right, and I’m so glad we got to experience it together.

Capturing Cleveland: Top Family Photography Tips for Stunning Photos | Summer Sunset Photo Session
1. Choose the Right Time and Lighting
- Golden Hour Magic: Shoot during the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—for that warm, flattering light.
- Natural Light: Opt for natural light whenever possible. Avoid harsh midday sun which can cause unflattering shadows.
2. Locations in Cleveland (I got you covered!)
- Iconic Spots: Consider locations like the Cleveland Metroparks, Lake Erie, the Flats, or the Cleveland Museum of Art.
- Local Vibes: Capture the unique character of Cleveland by choosing urban settings or scenic parks that resonate with the family’s personality.
3. Plan for Comfort and Coordination
- Wardrobe Choice: Coordinate outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Stick to a color palette that complements the surroundings.
- Comfort Matters: Ensure everyone is comfortable with their clothing and can move freely.
4. Engage and Interact
- Natural Poses: I Encourage natural interactions and candid moments. Capture genuine emotions and connections rather than stiff poses.
- Games and Activities: Incorporate playful activities or games to keep children engaged and happy.
6. Prepare for the Unexpected
- Flexibility: Be prepared to adapt to changing weather or lighting conditions.
- Patience: Work with the flow of the session and allow time for breaks if needed, especially with younger children.
